I object to the off-loading of what should be a provincial responsibility for stewardship of our environment to the municipalities. A foreseeable result is a chaotic and uneven patchwork of permitted land use and development throughout Ontario. Protected drinking water sources, wetlands and habitat for species at risk are threatened with "Open for Business" slogan - really nothing more than an abandonment of current land use regulations and protecting of few remaining, natural areas and farmlands across the Greenbelt. All seem now are at risk.
Watertown and Meadowlands of Ancaster are two examples of cancerous, poorly thought-out development - urban sprawl. These places are no longer walkable. Gridlock increases. Local trails are packed with pedestrians, in fact, impossible to access on Good Friday because of the increased density of population - no corresponding addition of proper parkland and naturalized areas. People throughout Ontario are in desperate need of the now acknowledged, restorative effects of natural areas.
We need to re-examine existing 'brown lands' in cities for remediation and future development, not farmland and pristine land protected in the Greenbelt Plan. More conservation lands need to be protected, for the use of future generations The term "Open for Business " is misleading - really, means Open for Rampant chaotic, unevenly applied Development. Doug Ford agreed to back off the development of protected lands. Should these by-laws of bill #66 go forward, he will have misled voters.
