Re: Bill 66
As someone who has been actively involved in community efforts to conserve the invaluable, unique heritage of Kingston, Ontario, I am horrified to see that the Ontario Government is inviting municipalities to bypass Official Plans, the Planning Act and other regulations in development applications in order to promote ‘economic growth opportunities’.
The rules that have been laid down by the province and municipalities to guide development are essential to ensure that the unique character and qualities of communities such as Kingston -- what entices people to come and do business here in the first place -- are able to flourish. Bill 66 would undermine that flourishing. Moreover, Bill 66 would be an undemocratic and procedurally improper piece of legislation, basically running roughshod over the rules that duly elected governments, local and provincial, have set up to ensure that economic development follows fair, open, and well-considered principles and policies. Please do not proceed with Bill 66!
