In proper consideration of the Fukushima incident, and given the upcoming licensing review for the Pickering nuclear plant, and given the geographic proximity of so many people in the GTA to a nuclear plant, our provincial government should:
--Independently model nuclear accidents, and not rely on models completed by industry. Clear conflict of interest.
--Publish these models prior to approving plans for Pickering.
--Inform the public, particularly those within the 50km secondary zone, of access to potassium iodide or whatever medical treatment is necessary, and advise GTA residents on including available treatments in emergency kits for homes.
-- Mandate municipalities to develop evacuation strategies
--Independently model water contamination scenarios and publish results. Develop a plan for emergency potable water supply.
--Use its jurisdiction to protect the Great Lakes, and require contingency plans to address questions such as : where will contaminated water be stored? How will it be isolated?
--Plan for evacuee return and land recovery in the event of a Fukushima-scale accident.
