Strong protection for environment and reduced impact on communities means that no extraction or blasting can occur below the water table. The situation in Guelph with the Dolomite site underlines this.
Increased fees shared with municipalities would help to pay for the damage, wear and tear on roads and bridges by the heavy trucks used to haul from sites. The constant traffic is disruptive, noisy, dangerous at times, and very hard on local populations and infrastructure.
More strictly enforced rehabilitation agreements need to be put into place. Many sites are abandoned and dangerous. Agricultural land is lost or damaged and not rehabilitated. Enforcement does not seem to occur in a timely fashion. Better contracts need to be in place and then proper enforcement done.
Enforcement of agreements needs to occur all along the process. These companies must be held accountable for the damage they do.
