The coastal area had undergone extensive change in the last century and is highly unlikely to support a self sustaining caribou herd now or in the future with exception of a few islands. Even these island populations are easily threatened when we experience cold weather and wolves gain access by an ice bridge.
Permanent man-made disturbance and infrastructure has dissected former caribou habitat and climate change even complicates caribou habitat further. Ontario should focus on protecting areas where caribou are presently sustainable.
I harvest moose in WFU 14 where moose are the featured species in an enhanced management area and I want this to continue. Management for caribou in this area would decimate decades of successful moose management.
