The consideration of the carbon emissions from the extraction of aggregate - in total as a process including the transportation, and its use in making cement - one of the primary producers of carbon dioxide, is very much overdue. This extraction cannot continue if we care in the least about the perils and consequences of climate change. Effort and research dollars should be going into identifying and developing alternatives with lower emissions, not in providing permits for more aggregate pits with associated damage to water resources, land, and habitat.
