We have learned that the plant, if built, would take in organic waste from all over Ontario to be used in its operations.
It is my firm belief that if this proposal were to be carried out, it would damage the surrounding environment, as well as cause great harm to the people in the residential areas nearby. The faults we find in the proposal are as follows:
The plant would emit sizeable amounts of at least 6 different toxic gases which would significantly worsen the air quality in the area. Two in particular, particulates and CO2, would cause pollution levels to rise above the allowable limits. This would result in residents, especially those with breathing difficulties and the many seniors in the area, suffering greater risks of respiratory problems.
Estimates for the proposal predict that about 100 large trucks would be coming and going every day between the site and the 401 expressway. The trucks would likely use local roads such as Manse Road, Coronation Road, Beechgrove Drive, and Lawrence Avenue. This would increase the risk of accidents on these routes, as well as resulting in the pavement wearing down at a faster pace. A hundred additional trucks would make driving conditions much more dangerous, for pedestrians as well as drivers.
The trucks would also pollute the area because their cargo would consist of food, animal, and human waste carried in open top beds, thus releasing foul smells and odours wherever they went. It would not help that the trucks themselves would emit smog into the air from their exhausts.
The proposed operation; as well as the trucks needed to support it, is completely out of place in a dense residential area with small children and a large population of elderly citizens. Furthermore, the plant would be situated in an area with schools, recreational centres, libraries, and other institutions that would be affected if it were to be built.
To summarize, the proposed Waste Disposal Site is an operation that should not, whatever its potential benefits, be placed right next to a dense residential area were thousands of people would be negatively affected. I ask you to strongly consider refusing the proposal for the plant and instead consider an alternate site far away from any residential areas.
Thank you for your time and we hope that you will consider this issue thoroughly.
Sincerely,
