The cancellation of the Cap and Trade program lacked a clear path forward. Prior to the cancellation of this kind of program, the government should CONSULT on an alternative program structure and content. At this moment, Hurricane Florence is thrashing the Eastern United States in what is being called one of the most potentially devastating storms in history. Global climate change will continue to produce these kinds of storms unless a clear and concise path forward is developed and adhered to.
While the current government and some voters did not like the Cap and Trade program, no alternatives have been proposed and we risk falling back more than a decade in our efforts to curb the impact that Ontario has on climate change. We haven't seen a smog day in over a decade, even in downtown Toronto where we used to see several per year. While the new Act requires the ministry to develop a plan for greenhouse gas emissions, this plan should be proposed and consulted on prior to cancelling the previous program.
