Hello, I am a student of the University of Toronto, taking a class that is mainly learning about how environmental assessments are done in Ontario, and Canada, and their purpose.
As a younger person, and part of a generation who cares deeply about the state of the world, specifically about the environment and sustainability, environmental assessments are extremely important to me. With this new approach with a project list-based assessment, I think it is a good step forward. This will make harmonization a lot easier, and for proponents trying to figure out if their projects need an extensive assessment, it will become much easier.
However, we must be vigilant about why the method is changing, and what projects will be covered. If this is something being disguised as helpful, but being developed to bypass a well-done EA for many projects that may have adverse effects, this is not good.
