Hi,
I'm writing to express my support of the Cap & Trade and Carbon Tax, and my opposition Bill 4. I attended the CAGBC meeting to hear the Minister talk about plans for meeting Carbon emission reduction targets. Compared to the Cap & Trade program and Carbon Tax, the outlined "balanced" approach seemed weakly conceived and lacked the strong leadership Ontarians need on this critical issue. The Minister even admitted that Carbon Tax and Cap & trade are effective systems and that the government has no concrete plans beyond collaborating with industry. However, he did not present any evidence that this approach is effective or beneficial. Further, I feel that eliminating Cap & Trade is not aligned with the economic interests of Ontarians:
1. Eliminating the Cap & Trade program has already had a negative impact on the Ontario economy in the form of the loss of local contractor jobs supported by home energy retrofit programs.
2. A recent paper (reported in Huffington Post, linked below ) says that if we dramatically reduce greenhouse gases within the next 3 years, the resulting “grand economic transformation could bring a $26 trillion economic windfall, create 65 million new jobs, and avoid 700,000 early deaths linked to air pollution ― by a conservative estimate.”. We in Ontario could be leading the way towards these economic benefits, not running and hiding in the past.
