There are sound environmental reasons that the greenbelt is protected. This is why the restrictions were established in the first place. The Oak Ridges moraine is an important source of clean water for the GTA and currently hosts many plant and animal species including quite a sufficient number of humans! The Ontario Government’s proposal to swap out greenbelt lands is detrimental to the environment and serves only the interests of developers. It has nothing to do with building affordable housing as there is plenty of other land for affordable housing to be built on and developers’ interest in these areas has more to do with their ownership of this land than the prospect of providing affordable housing. Their interest is in generating as much profit as possible. Anyone who has driven on highway 400 recently understands that more commuters will only make a bad situation worse. The new “highway to nowhere” will not help. We all understand that that highway is just meant to help a bunch of rich developers/construction companies get richer.
As a resident of Richmond Hill I am appalled at this government’s bullying tacics including MZO’s and expedited MZO’s to override municipalities’ official plans. The propect of dozens of 60+ story buildings along highway 7 will destroy Richmond Hill/Markham’s identities. This Ontario government does not speak for the residents of this province. It is clear that it is time for the entire populace to join with our municipal councils and environmental groups to stop our current Ontario government from destroying this province.
