This bill is an act of civic vandalism by the current government whose only goal here is to destroy what was created by the previous government, regardless of whether it's good policy or not. The cap and trade program was generating money to be used for environmental initiatives that were valuable to the people of this province. Industry paid into the system, buying billions of dollars of credits that are now worthless, opening up the government to legal liability. The government says that they made a pledge to repeal the cap and trade plan during the election and they won the election so now that means they have a mandate to go ahead and do this. But this argument is not acceptable because the government only received 40% of the votes in the election while 60% of the votes went to the three other parties that supported the cap and trade plan. All the money and time that was spent in setting this cap and trade program up, all the money that was paid into it by industry players in good faith, all the positive environmental applications that the generated money could have gone towards, all the good jobs that could've been and were created, all this now goes to waste just so that we can maybe pay five cents less on our gas. It really is just taking us backwards for no discernible purpose but to fulfil a campaign pledge that should've never been made in the first place. This government would rather just destroy the system that is in place and do nothing to address reigning in greenhouse gas emissions, rather than let the system remain and work on it to improve it. This repeal bill is a major blunder by the government and bad for the province.
