I do not support the proposed amendment to the Greenbelt Plan. I am extremely disappointed and shocked at the actions of this government. The Greenbelt is a permanently protected area that provides us with fresh air, clean water and is home to plenty of wildlife. You are proposing that you will only be taking a portion of the land to construct houses. But this is how it starts. Allowing construction on part of the Greenbelt will only encourage other developers and government officials to request development on additional areas of the Greenbelt. The houses that will be constructed on this protected land will be mostly detached and will not fulfill the housing shortage. They will also not be affordable for most people. Furthermore, parts of the lands that you proposing to add to the Greenbelt area are already protected. This would not reduce the loss of the land that you are planning to use. In addition, the reason behind this proposal was the number of immigrants expected in Canada in the upcoming years. The areas where the construction is proposed would be in the countryside. It is not where new immigrants will go when they first arrive in Canada. The Greater Toronto Area has enough land available to provide for housing development. You do not need to destroy our protected areas that provide us with a healthy ecosystem.
The government had made a promise that they would not touch the Greenbelt and they are doing exactly that. I suppose I should not be surprised, however I did not think that they could stoop so low.
