Building on these areas of the greenbelt plan Greenbelt Plan (O. Reg. 59/05), and Oak Ridges Moraine (O. Reg. 140/02) will significantly impact both the rogue river water shed and Oak Ridges Moraine. These two are critical to our water supply in Lake Ontario.
Furthermore the proposed removal of green belt area in Vaughan Map 2 and Richmond Hill Map3 will lead to increase salinity of our lakes. Both areas are near road and rivers, the green belt area acts as a buffer for Road salt. The development of these areas will increase the amount of road salt into our lake decreasing our Water security as a Province.
Another point is that the areas of Map 2 and Map 3 are flood plains of the rogue river any further development will increase the severity of 50 year flood event due to less run off area available. These developments will actually cause increase cost over time due to this as Climate change occurs and increase in extreme weather events happen.
The loss of such critical parts of the Green Belt show that the government of Ontario requires further understanding of the effects of Green Belt has on our water security and flood security.
