At a time when the impacts of climate change are becoming more dire and clear by the day, it is stunning to see the government propose removing land from the Greenbelt and undermine conservation authorities is stunning. Nature is not replaceable and cannot simply be offset from one place to another. If we plan to avoid climate crisis and leave a livable planet for future generations, instead of removing protections, the government needs to be doing all it can to add protections to existing green spaces and invest in restoring degraded habitat. We need affordable housing, but there are ways to accomplish increased, more affordable housing without compromising the environment in such a blatant way. Rather than continuing to increase urban sprawl and developing more townhomes, we should be focusing on densification and improving public transit, and placing regulations on people with multiple homes, including rental units, cottages/vacation homes, and airbnbs. Everything about this proposal is disheartening and shortsighted. Please don't do this.
