I oppose this plan. The Greenbelt protects our drinking water and there is an urgent need to protect these resources due to the increasing urbanization and rural development, and fluctuating weather patterns caused by climate change, which will have serious negative impacts, particularly on water quality and quantity in Ontario.
In addition, prime farmland would be lost forever. Wildlife movement would be blocked and thousands of animals (some already at risk of extinction) would be killed.
Furthermore, there are multiple studies that explain how exposure to nature not only makes you feel better emotionally, it contributes to your physical wellbeing, reducing blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones, and that's only to list a few. Tree air is loaded with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory, agents antiseptics, antivirals, and analgesics.
The Greenbelt builds resistance to and mitigates climate change.
The Greenbelt is supposed to be permanently protected!
Also to add, Doug Ford wrote in May 2020: "Unequivocally, we won't touch the Greenbelt [...] people don't want me touching the Greenbelt."
and in June 2020, he said: "We're not going to touch the Greenbelt, I will never touch the Greenbelt."
Last year, Housing Minister Steve Clark said the government "will not in any way entertain any proposals that will move lands in the Greenbelt, or open the Greenbelt lands to any kind of development."
Allow this would also help ease the way for other attempts to take land out of the Greenbelt.
So much valuable land is already being sacrificed to house highway 413.
I shudder to think of what we are leaving for our great-grandchildren - a forest of high-rise condominiums, no parkland, and food imported from third world countries.
Again, I oppose!
