I am a private Ontario citizen who is incredibly concerned about the proposed changes to the Green Belt.
The Green Belt is incredibly important to the long term viability and livability of our province.
According to the Greenbelt Foundation website: "The Greenbelt safeguards the vital resources that clean our air and water, reduces our flood risks, provides a home for wildlife, and ensures our communities have greenspace to explore." It also houses some of the most fertile farmland in North America.
The green belt creates $9.6 billion in economic impact every year and is the source of 177,700 full-time jobs. https://www.greenbelt.ca/
As we face ongoing climate change, and supply chain issues it is more important than ever before to safe guard both the natural spaces we have, and the remarkably rich and vital local farmland that is found within the greenbelt.
We cannot allow rich developers under the guise of addressing our housing affordability crises to decimate the green belt in the name of profit. Housing affordability cannot be solved by building large single family homes and increasing urban sprawl.
The lands protected within the greenbelt are pristine and unique and once soiled they will be lost forever, altering our communities in irreversible ways.
I urge Premiere Ford and the Government of Ontario to keep their promise to protect our Greenbelt!
