I strongly oppose the Proposed Amendments to the Greenbelt Plan. We are in the midst of a climate crisis. As a whole, the Greenbelt, provides 3.2 billion dollars every year in ecosystem services, including $224M per year in flood protection for private property and $52M per year in carbon sequestration (Greenbelt Foundation, 2016). There has been no clear research that the lands that will be added to the Greenbelt will have the same or greater ecological services than what is being taken away. Connectivity is essential to the design of the Greenbelt. It is a dangerous precedent to approve a "land swap" that may undermine the integrity of the Greenbelt. This plan appears to be motivated by short-term gains at the expense of our environment and our future. As a citizen of Ontario and voter, I strongly disagree with these proposed amendments.
