I am extremely concerned about Bill 23. While I absolutely agree that more homes are needed, I believe this bill will cause as many problems as it purports to want to solve. It will worsen climate change by destroying carbon sinks like forests, wetlands and grasslands. It will lead to more people suffering from mental health problems because of a reduction of natural spaces, which are known to be places of solace and healing for people with anxiety, depression and other conditions. It will lead to more damage to homes when they are built in flood plains or on unstable soils. And it will lead to the destruction of our built and ecological heritage, which will lead to lower tourism and civic pride.
These are just a few of the consequences that will result if this bill is passed in its current form. But finally, it will likely also lead to the downfall of the Ford government in the next election.
Do better.
