Despite my agreement with the imperative to build housing, MMAH and the Provincial Government must publish stronger rationales for the development of the Rouge Duffins Agricultural Preserve. Why is this specific parcel being opened up at this time, and why is this needed given the abundance of existing "whitebelt" land inside the existing Greenbelt boundaries?
This is particularly concerning given that the sum total of area removed from the Greenbelt will provide only an estimated 50,000, or 3%, of the Province's targeted 1.5 million new homes. Is 3% of the target worth the price of setting a precedent of opaque land swap deals agreed to hastily and without public consultation? I believe not. At the very least, the development of the RDAP should be subject to Provincial expropriation and auctioning so that public accounts, and not developer pockets, benefit from any future changes to Greenbelt boundaries.
