The bill should never have been introduced. It goes against the wishes of the majority of people in this province and against the clear mandates of several of the effected municipalities.
The bill encourages urban sprawl in areas that are environmental sensitive and areas without existing infrastructure. The financial burden is placed on municipal governments is excessive and will result in significant increases in local property taxes.
The development of these proposed lands will not occur for a number of years. The alternative is to encourage brown field development in areas that have existing infrastructure which can be readily developed.
These areas tend to be in central locations and are accessible to municipal services and transportation links.
The Greenbelt and related farmlands must be reserved for future generations. It is projected that with climate change there will be significant impacts on agricultural areas that we now rely on for our imported food. We will have to develop all existing agricultural land to ensure our own domestic food security.
