This bill greatly concerns me as a lifetime resident of Ontario. As the Narwhal and Toronto Star's recent investigations have shown, it is tantamount to legislated corruption in the open to benefit Conservative donors.
Putting that aside, it is a terrible policy on virtually every front, as remarked upon by the mayors of all outlying municipalities and experts in the field. At this stage it is virtually impossible to find support for this bill, outside of the PC government. It severely reduces affordable housing, will cost municipatlities and their tax payers billions over the next few years, will increase flood risk not only in the areas being developed but in outlying areas that will lack the controls currently in place, and put the nail in the coffin for several endangered migratory bird species.
The solution to the housing crisis lies in building density, not sprawl. With this bill on the cusp of passing, I would encourage all working within regional municipal offices, and the labour movement in general, to begin organizing a general strike and, where possible, boycotts. It appears to be the only language this government understands.
