As an Ontarian, I am very unhappy with the direction taken by our new government. Cap and trade was an excellent source of revenue for the government to finance the move to green options, while supporting taxpayers, who wished to become more efficient in their heating and lighting, to save money at home. Industry was rewarded for becoming more efficient. As seen by the money currently sitting in the "Green Fund", this was a cash-cow that could have gone to make life better for the people of Ontario.
If the current government is sincere in wanting to help slow climate change, the following points are my supported suggestions:
1. I want a real climate change plan to reduce emissions, help people save energy and create jobs in the $26 trillion clean economy;
2. I want Ontario to put a price on pollution, making polluters pay for their emissions and returning the revenues to the pockets of Ontarians so they can lower their carbon footprint;
3. I want legally binding emissions targets in line with our obligations to the Paris Climate Agreement.
I want Ontario to be 100% powered by clean energy by 2050; and
4. I want Ontario to end subsidies and handouts for fossil fuel companies and redirect this money to clean energy solutions.
Thank you for your consideration. The government's decision to move forward with an effective green plan that builds a smaller carbon footprint for Ontario is too important to ignore.
