Though I thoroughly agree with the desperate need to increase Ontario's housing stock, both owned and rental, I'm extremely discouraged by the Ontario government's decision to open the Greenbelt to development.
Numerous Ontario communities have recommended rezoning within their municipalities as a way to create the majority of the housing stock required. To build vertical, not horizontal essentially. The sewage, electrical, and water infrastructure already exists and can be augmented much more cost effectively than build out into the hinterland. Why not listen to communities?
Our two children are in the rental market and will eventually seek ownership. They are not interested in over-sized million dollar houses stuck in the middle of nowhere. They've expressed interest in affordable housing that allows them to remain in our community. Certainly they reflect countless young people, single parents, immigrants, and the working poor in this simple aspiration.
I'm also dismayed at the degradation to our environment this decision will inspire. My kids are deeply concerned about Climate Change. It is very real to them. They will be the most affected. Not us.
Please listen to your constituents. This is a most challenging time and it requires the courage to do what is best for the present and the future generation.
Sincerely
JL
