The changes in the Bill 23 affecting the Heritage Act are completely unacceptable. These changes will reduce the quality of life for all Ontarians, since no one wants to live surrounded by only new buildings, without any sense of the past. Municipalities must be allowed to list properties without designation, or, at the very least, be given longer than two years to designate listed properties. Requiring sites to meet two criteria for designation will make it impossible to designate culturally significant First Nations sites and those sites important to various racial groups.
These changes are intended to allow developers to develop any property they want, without any regard for the community and cannot be allowed to go ahead.
