The development of the Greenbelt appears incredibly short sighted due to the fact that it would mean paving over a biologically diverse ecosystem and adding to the alarming situation of climate change. It also seems to inappropriately connect the Premier to business developers where both would gain financially with the sale of this precious land. Most people learned during Covid that maintaining our ability to grown food locally is crucial for controlling the supply chain and allowing Ontarians to access quality food.
It has come to the attention of people in Ontario that developers, who have donated and/or are connected to the Ontario PC party, also recently purchased properties from the Greenbelt. If true, this would be a huge conflict of interest for the Ford government and create more distrust of developers and the democratic process. Ultimately, this proposal would put a protected ecosystem and the people of Ontario at risk.
There is indeed a need for housing - low income, accessible housing. This type of building would not create as much wealth for the Premier and his business associates.
Land has already been allocated for housing development so the use Greenbelt land (which was promised by Doug Ford to be maintained) is quite suspicious on many levels.
It is very surprising that this proposal was created and even more so that is might be passed.
