The current Ontario Greenbelt lands must stay protected. They provide multiple ecosystem services including food security, clean water, flood management and opportunities for recreation. Opening up these lands to development would not only compromise these ecosystem service but further negate the mitigating effects that this land had on the increasing impacts of climate change. Moreover, those most in need of housing, including recent immigrant, low income families and first time home buyers, will likely be unable to afford any housing developed close to the Greenbelt. Instead of increasing urban sprawl and thereby increasing pressure on the Greenbelt, make use of existing land and infrastructure (outside of the Greenbelt and closer to existing urban centres) to develop affordable housing.
