Dear Mr. Ford and the Ontario PC party,
Please do not proceed with the proposed removal of 7,400 Greenbelt acres.
Please PC party, you are not the Liberals, you are not McGuilty and his developers on Greenbelt, you are not the Liberal party that came after with lies, broken promises and stupid ideas.
You are PC, you are common sense, you are forward thinking and you are better than them. Do not break the promise on the Greenbelt. Paraphrasing Ernie Eves, Once farmland is built on, it doesn’t get changed back. It is simply removed, never to be used for public good again.
Class one farmland needs to be protected, and we as a Province need to utilize it to be as food and produce reliable and independent as possible. Moving bedrock land into Greenbelt protected status does not make it class one farmland, nor does it change the make up of the land for food and animal sustainability. The international supply chains will continue to be broken. They will not get fixed, nor will those countries look to provide Canada and Ontarians priority with goods.
New homes should be built on lands within cities that you have at your disposal. As much as possible, build density, low income homes. Developers will not build for “the people”, “the little guy or girl”, developers will continue to build 2000+ sq ft homes that will continue to be unaffordable for most at $1MM+.
If you really want to help people, have developers build homes on land you already have available for development and have them do it for Ontarians with $300k budgets. Really help the people who are struggling to get buy (with a job and 1-2 side hustles). These homes, while small, will provide a safe, cozy home Ontarians can call their own. Put in regulations where trust funds, speculators and Real Estate Agents and investors cannot manipulate the price of small homes, driving prices up through assignments.
Our neighborhood and friends voted for you because we believed your message and your actions. In this case, with the Greenbelt you are plain wrong. There is no grey area here… Greenbelt should be off limits for new homes.
