While the ''cap and trade'' system was not my preferred option to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it would have led to a reduction in them. The Ford government is in effect abdicating its responsibility to protect and improve the environment by not having a replacement strategy in place before repealing ''cap and trade''.
As virtually every economist knows, a tax on a good or service reduces the supply of that item from what it otherwise would be.
Ontario ought to be enacting a strong program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enacting policies to significantly reduce fossil fuel consumption.
The IPCC report released on Monday, Oct. 8 shows the tremendous difference between a 1.5C and a 2.0C global temperature increase. There is much that can be done to both lessen and mitigate temperature rise impacts.
The climate change debate should not be dominated by uniformed political ideology. Simplistic anti-tax and anti-government slogans are specious.
Ford and his government will look foolish when the federal Liberal government (of which I am not a member or supporter), enacts its carbon tax and then refunds the amount to individuals. There is little doubt among constitutional experts that the federal government has the authority to implement its carbon tax.
Ontario ought to be governed by an analytical approach to issues which relies on best available knowledge.
Therefore, an effective climate change policy is essential.
