Nobel-prize-winning economists have shown that the most effective way to reduce fossil fuel emissions is by putting a price on carbon. The proposal to axe our current methods to address greenhouse gas production wastes precious time, time that is fast running out to save our planet. The most recent United Nations report on climate change gives us a slender 11 years to make huge reductions in our reliance on fossil fuels before we spiral into irreversably destructive rising temperatures.. We need our government to lead the way in changing our habits, not to stall enforcing new approaches.
The costs of flash floods, persistent droughts, wildfires, ice storms, increasingly frequent and severe tornadoes and hurricanes will cost us much, much more than putting a price on carbon. Indeed, house insurance has already risen because of the now greater likelihood of damage to homes from floods.
The current Bill to end cap-and-trade, with the benefits it generated for upgrading the energy efficiency of schools, hospitals and homes, would be a huge step in the wrong direction.
