The ministry is being very misleading about ‘affordable’. The most recent definition is in the Provincial Policy Statement, and is defined as 30% of income. The ministry has proposed removing that definition. The definition currently in the DCA has not been enacted. So what is being proposed is far worse than the most recent definition.
Where I live, the 60th percentile is currently roughly $96,000, and the median is $77,000. This means the definition of ‘affordable’ would be based on a much higher income. The only beneficiaries if the new, higher definition are developers, who can get dc relief for building homes that only those in upper incomes can afford. It beggars belief that the ministry would stoop so low.
Builders should ONLY be given valuable public dollars to build truly affordable homes for a majority. By setting the bar so high, this government will force municipalities to give money to developers for building housing that is only affordable to higher income earners.
