In view of the overwhelming evidence in support of climate change and especially in light of the most recent report of the International Panel on Climate Change underlining the urgency of the need for action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, this may be the most misguided piece of legislation introduced into the Ontario legislature in its history. The principal purpose of the Act - to provide for a reduction in the cost of gasoline - not only undermines needed efforts to reduce hydro-carbon consumption, but also flies in the face of the market driven logic of the retail fuel market in Canada and internationally. The Act should be withdrawn and genuinely constructive and effective initiatives to reduce carbon emissions should be considered.
