I would like to comment as I have many reasons I am against and worries about this proposal.
York 1 is trying to open and greatly expand an old landfill permit less than 1km from the town of Dresden.
This old permit was to bury ash from an old incinerator decades ago. They were trying to use this as a loop hole to have this sneak by a compressive environmental assessment. They use the title recycle and transfer plant but the wording in the proposal has landfill and plans to expand as they bought two farms next to this location and have reached out to buy other farms adjacent to this property. They use the term non toxic waste but then use wording to bring in asbestos and other house hold garbage bringing odours and toxic material to this town.
With their approach on trying to sneak this by our municipality and use loop holes to try to pass this through. I would be concerned about their due diligence in assuring the handling of asbestos. This material, 10 times thinner than a human hair is very harmful to one’s health. 1 piece per cubic cm is considered more than dangerous. This material has no smell and invisible to see. With this project being less than 1 km to town, it’s way too close. This town also is home to two schools, elementary and high school.
Bill 197 has a landfill allows the municipality to have the final say on if it can proceed. The municipality both Chatham Kent and lambton Kent have both said they are against it. The only difference is that, this loop hole of it not being technically a new landfill doesn’t allow this bill to apply. The same concerns and dangers do. New or not 1km away from a town is too close. It’s documented that 5 km is the safe distance to be from a landfill.
This site is also less than 1 km from the Sydenham river. This river is full of protected and endangered species and some that are only found here in all of Canada. They plan on using mollys creek, that flows through the property and drains into the Sydenham river to collect and drain their run off. It has been brought up that this process has already been approved as they snuck thought a proposal for this without the community knowing. This area is also known for flooding. This could catastrophic to the species that thrive in this area.
With the risk to the community and species near by. With the information we know on landfills, bills in place to prevent a proposal like this within this distance from a town, and documented safe distance of landfills. The affects of this landfill cannot be reversed.
I would not be able to sign off on such a proposal knowing all this information, the risks to health, and precedent set by the landfill proposal being overturned in Ingersoll and Kingston.
