I would like to express our concern over the proposal of putting a mega dump within 200 meters of the homes in the north end of Dresden. The extra land purchased by York1 for future expansion comes all the way down to Croton Road which is 200 meters from our northern most subdivision. There is talk of having a full environmental assessment which is fine if the project was viable, this project at this location is not.
We do no need an assessment to determine if the property is a viable solution to the waste problem in Ontario. You just need to see how close it is to Dresden and what the detrimental effect it would have on the town. The town's residence are concerned with the typical problems that would be introduced by having a mega dump at such a close proximity to town. The issues of air pollution, noise pollution, traffic congestion, pollution into the creek backing onto the property and the pollution of the Sydenham River which the creek feeds into. The effects on the ground water and the effects on well that are supplying drinking water to homes adjacent to the property.
With the type of material York1 proposed will be stored, processed and buried on the property would definitely be the major contributor to the issues listed above. One issue which many do not think of, would be caused by the companies asks which is 500 tonnes of putrescible waste (green bin garbage) which would attract all sorts of animals and in particular rats. The rats also carry disease which would be an issue for homes in close proximity to the dump especially during winters when rats are looking for a warm place to spend the winter. There are many reasons why dumps are not placed close to residential neighborhoods. There are reasons why a buffer of 1.5km's is put into the zoning bylaws to protect the citizens of nearby towns. Why this dump is even being considered for a Environmental Assessment is hard to believe. The red flags are everywhere, but maybe the Government in Toronto is just too far away to see them. Stop this project now and put an end to the madness.
