I believe a complete environmental assessment needs to be done on the proposed York 1 Dresden landfill. The landfill site was used as a small landfill and has been inactive since the 1980's. A lot has changed with new regulations in play now.
As a resident living in Dresden we have many concerns,
Water contamination of Molly creek which flows into the Sydenham river which eventually empties into the St. Clair river.
Part of the landfill sits in a flood plane. How to control contaminated surface water escaping into the waterways.
Destruction of existing water wells.. Already one resident is having methane gas issues with their well since some drilling on the site has taken place nearby.
Soil pollution, loss for good agricultural farm land to feed people.
Air pollution.
Destruction of wildlife, some species are only found in the surrounding area. Extinction of some species.
Increase in noise. Proposed working hours 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
Huge increase in truck traffic to Dresden and surrounding area with up to 750 trucks coming and then 750 leaving everyday. In Dresden alone the trucks will be passing by a public school and a high school.
Large truck traffic will be passing through the village of Dresden.
Health concerns.
Loss of business opportunities that would come to Dresden and surrounding area.
Decrease in local economy.
Decrease in residential home values.
Proximity of the dump is a huge issue. The southern border of proposed dump is only a short distance to the edge of the town of Dresden. The whole town of Dresden is within the 3.5 kilometres of the dump.
I believe a complete environmental assessment will point out the concerns of the residents of Dresden and surrounding area.
