I have seen the damage that nesting cormorants can do to areas where they nest. However, the shortage of suitable nesting locations is a result of previous poor political decisions to allow urban development along shorelines and environmentally sensitive areas for corporate profit.

I find overall that this proposal is deeply disturbing, and it is highly doubtful that cormorants are to blame for reduced fish stocks and pollution.

This cull is overdue, I hope this will start soon before it's to late. The waste of money has been spent on stocking just to feed these birds. Then I think we should be looking at the Canadian Geese overpopulation and damage to area parks, beaches etc. Should enforce a law on feeding them.
Please stop the plan for the cormorant hunt. I don't think it's well thought out. The number of kills per day is out of line, there is no number that decides when enough is enough. Your proposal states that the cormorant population is down already.

The Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) should be reclassified the same as Double-crested cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) and added to this hunting season with similar bag limits.

Re: ERO number 013-4124
I wish to state my very strong opposition to a double-crested cormorant hunting season and all other aspects of the current proposal.

I am a long time hunter and advocate for the traditions of hunting in Canadian culture. I am appalled that the term "hunting" would be used to describe the killing of cormorants, which have no practical use as is the case with any other game animal.

I have spent weeks gleaning information and background material on this proposal. I do not see any research or documentation to justify adding Double-crested Cormorants to the Game Bird category. Over recent times the species has increased in many areas of the Great Lakes and other bodies of water.

I oppose the proposal to establish a hunting season for double-crested cormorants in Ontario. This species in inedible and the hunt would be nothing more than an extermination of an ecologically important native species to this province. This is both unethical and inhumane.
I fish 3 of the Great Lakes, Ontario, Erie. and Huron. These birds have a devastating effect on fish populations in all areas. They decimate and move relentlessly. Their only limiting factor is food supply.
Cormorants are a native species and it is a good thing they are recovering in numbers and part of lake ecosystems including consuming fish as their diet. Hunting 50 birds a day is not acceptable.
A significant colony of cormorants (numbering about 45+) roost on several tall pine trees on Turnip Island, Wolfe Lake. They arrive towards the beginning of August.

Dr. Gale Fraser's comments and opinions that were quoted in the Globe and Mail article of Dec. 15, 2018 regarding scientific studies, and Ange Brooks' references (Toronto Ornithological Club) to other options for population control of the double-crested cormorants are those that I support.
