Why would the Ontario Govt., through the MNRF, even consider permitting the hunting of Black Bears in an age when top predators have been scientifically shown to be essential for maintaining balanced ecosystems? It shows willful ignorance by this government.

I disagree with an annual bear hunt.
The bear territory has and is being encroached upon by human growth and population.
Please don’t be swayed by the money that comes from bear hunting to agree to an annual hunt.

Killing other sentient beings for sport or consumption is unnecessary.
We need to shift our way of thinking that we are superior to ther races or species.
Transition to compassion.
Involve people in conservation/protection of habitat for all living creatures.

I think that a later start date for bear hunting would lessen the chance of a cub being orphaned from its mother. A hunter cannot tell the difference between a male and female black bear. The sow does not always appear with its cubs.

I am appalled that this discussion is happening again.
I am very concerned for bear cubs that could be orphaned because trigger -happy hunters just shoot a bear instead of confirming they are seeing a male or female first.
When will it be realized that humans are encroaching into their homes?

At the same time as the Ford Government is talking about its new Forest Strategy to increase timber cutting by 50 % from its current level, MNR &F is being pressured to bring back the spring bear hunt which will increase the cull of these large animals.

As a member of the Ontario Hunters & Anglers, I am strongly opposed to any spring bear hunt. There is no guarantee that bears that are hunted will not leave cubs orphaned. There is no need to hunt bears, only a want, so leave them alone.
I urge the government to not institute a spring bear hunt. This is the time of year when there sre mothers with cubs. Killing the mothers leaves many orphans cubs that cannot survive on their own. A very cruel and unnecessary practice. Don't pander to the hunting community.
I am vehemently opposed to reinstating the spring bear hunt for the following reasons:
1. Baiting hungry bears and waiting in camouflaged blinds to cut them down is not a sport but a slaughter.

If people live in areas where they may need to arm themselves for self-defense in case they come into contact with bears, that's one thing, but there should be ZERO bear hunts.
In my opinion in order to guard against very young bear cubs being orphaned in the Spring, the Bear Hunt should best take place in June. MS Wasaga Beach
