Wood pellets are dirtier than coal. They were originally advertised as a way to utilize wood 'waste'. But now, in provinces like mine (BC) huge numbers of live trees are being cut for pellets. This has to stop. Everywhere. Including Ontario.
Burning wood for energy is NOT the way to avoid burning fossil fuels. We need our forests, and we need biomass left in our forests for ongoing growth. The Boreal forest is critical for wildlife, including (and especially) as breeding grounds for many species of birds.
The “Green” Myth Behind Wood Pellets: Now, there is a well-respected and growing body of research demonstrating that wood pellets are neither carbon-neutral nor sustainable.11 Many of these studies, like one done by the NRDC in 2015, have found that burning wood pellets for fuel releases as much as,

Wood is at best a renewable resource, but only if it is tightly managed, unlike hoe B.C. manages trees. People, industry and the earth can all benefit if there is well policed management of forests around the world.

Dear Honourable Leaders,
Wood pellets are not a good source of energy, especially not at the expense of our forests. It is not cleaner than coal burning, and will only cause more deforestation.
There has to be a better solution. Please do not move forward with this plan.
Thank you,
Trudy
We as a province, and as a nation, need to move away from practices that are outdated and bad for our planet. We must invest more in areas that will carry us forward into the future where we’re not polluting our air, water and earth.

Trees should not be cut down for firewood or for wood pellet production, or indeed for any other purpose at this time in our earth. I urge you to “Stop expanding the wood pellet industry – it’s a false climate solution that is dirtier than coal at the smokestack.”
I am sorry to hear that wood pellets are considered a good barbecue fuel since by using/allowing them to be used like that, the use of wood pellets adds to the reduction of one of the essentials of our world namely trees.

Isn’t burning wood pellets is dirtier than coal at the smokestack and aren’t many Canadian provinces including Ontario logging whole trees from primary forests to meet the growing demand for wood pellets?

Initial studies of the benefits of making and using wood pellets were based on the wood pellet industry only using logging by-products such as the branches and bark from logged trees.
