The current government cancelled renewable energy projects which need to be re-instated. Funding is also needed for low-carbon community and district energy systems, as well as for deep efficiency and decarbonization retrofits. Ontario should be a leader in renewable and low-carbon energy.

Does regional integration play a part in the decarbonization pathway? For example, Quebec and Manitoba have abundant hydroelectric resources that could potentially play a similar role as gas in terms of grid stability.

Very disappointing. There is no bold statements on the use of microgrids, virtual power plants, two way Electric Vehicle power flows, massive use of DERs. The plan is to build more transmission lines to distant new generating stations as was done a hundred years ago.

[I am Peter Dick, a P. Eng. who worked for the Research Division of Ontario Hydro, then Kinectrics, retiring in 2005 and consulting since then in the area of electrical safety with regard to generation, substations, lines and cables. I support the need to move away from fossil fuels.

To Whom It May Concern:
The recommendations seem very reasonable. My comments would include the following:
Affordability and reliability are paramount.
Ontario has much bigger emissions issues outside of the power sector.

While the IESO's P2D study does a good job of laying out a plan for one possible path to decarbonization, Workbench Energy believes there are other options which will allow the Province to decarbonize more quickly while also achieving lower electricity costs.

In terms of energy storage I believe pumped hydro is currently out best option. It has largely been proven to work and be cost effective. I believe OPG and TC Energy both currently have proposed pumped storage projects.

A few points I'd like to raise regarding the report. Hydro expansion and import may contain risk associated with climate change and changing water flows.

For electrifying our province to support decarbonization we need to focus on base load power from nuclear and hydro relying on renewables for non base load. New hydro and nuclear projects should have indigenous equity so that we can approach these projects with reconciliation as a key priority.
Thank you for the opportunity to provide input and advice on the Environmental Registry posting regarding the IESO’s Pathways to Decarbonization Report (P2D).
