This proposal is wrong for the following reasons. I beleive it reduces the requirements for mining companies to post bonds or other financial securities to cover clean-up costs after a mine closes.

On behalf of myself, my children and all future Ontarians, I reject the proposed. On the basis that many mine sites Canada-wide have never been truly reclaimed even with the best-proposed closure plans. It is imperative that a plan be in place rather than dig first, try to repair later.

It appears that these changes will make it easier for a mining company to avoid carrying out remediation in a timely fashion or to substitute restoration in some other area which would cause more environmental damage in the target area.

This proposal is presented as having been formulated based on feedback received from industry, but without feedback from Aboriginal groups (the duty to consult) or environmental organizations. All three are important to creating a fair, equitable, and responsible plan moving forward.

The wording of the amendments is troublesome.
For example:
"establishing the concept of qualified persons in the Mining Act"....I would like to see this government name an environmentalist and third party expert in the mining field to be the "qualified persons".
