The expanding protected areas proposal is fine as far as it goes. However, this barely moves the needle in terms of Canada's commitment to protect 30% of its lands and waters by 2030 as a party to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity. Under this proposal, about 10,000 additional hectares will be protected which represents less than 0.01 % of Ontario's lands and waters. Ontario can do much better than this.
