I am against using valuable farmland to build expensive houses because we need farms for food for people and farm animals. The water problem in Norfolk County is decades old, yet there is no improvement to our failing structures. The aquifers in Waterford were designed for a population of 2,000 yet the present population is over 4,000. A catastrophe would result should there be a breakdown. Builders are set to add hundreds of houses to Waterford alone!
Also, due to agricultural practices in this primarily agricultural county, our drinking water is at risk for contamination. If more farm fields are turned in to housing, we lose land that can mitigate the water issues. The existing infrastructure and system deficiencies continue to be at high risk in Port Dover, Simcoe, and Waterford. There was a moratorium on building in Port Dover for a brief spell, but the water issue has not been rectified. Although there are many reasons why expanding Norfolk in the proposed manner is foolhardy, water seems to be at the top of our concerns.
The County is misguided if they say the people want to add thousands of houses to farm land, and to expand the town’s boundaries. The people have been objecting in every lawful way possible, yet the Mayor says she’s heard nothing against this ridiculous plan. This is false. Many citizens read their deputations to the Council on May 22, 2024. They were not listened to, and only two Councilors voted against using farmland for new, pricey home builds. This is unlawful and we hope that the Municipality will be corrected.
