The draft Advanced Wood Construction Action Plan is an excellent step forward by the government of ON to help expand use of wood as a low-carbon building material in Ontario's infrastructure projects to help reduce the environmental footprints of buildings while contributing to growing and supporting the forest sector, therefore creating opportunities for thousands of Ontario families and other communities that are dependent on the health of the sector. This plan will also encourage innovation and investment in this industry given the current interest by designers, developers and other construction stakeholders in using mass timber and other wood-based products in construction. This will help establish Ontario as a leader in advanced wood construction manufacturing and expertise.
Moreover, launching such plan will help compliment and align the current efforts and programs by other provinces such as BC and QC and NRCan focused at supporting advanced manufacturing of new generation of wood based products including mass timber and showcasing innovative design and construction building technologies through demonstration projects. Examples of those programs and incentives include, BC Wood First and mass Timber program and NRCan's GCWood program!
The proposed elements of the plan that including supporting manufacturing including prefabrication and R&D to advance building codes and demonstration projects makes a lot of sense and is certainly aligned with other programs currently in place by other provinces and the federal government.
