It appears to me that the purpose of this proposed Act is to wind down our existing climate change plan. What I don't see is what will be replacing it.
Climate change is happening NOW.
Hurricane Michael, which just landed on the Florida coast is the worst storm in 50 years!
Our planet is heating up NOW.
We can't afford to scrap the plan that we have now, and then hem and haw and drag our collective feet trying to come up with something else.
The polar ice sheets are melting while we delay.
The wildfires continue to burn while we delay.
Extreme weather occurrences will not pause until we're ready to deal with them.
How many species of plants, animals, birds and marine life will we lose due to habitat destruction, due to a warming Earth?
This problem is now URGENT! We need to build on what we have NOW, by reaching out globally and working together to address this problem. Scrapping what we now have in favour of some vague notions is not acceptable! If our current climate change plan is not working, first we need to come up with a plan containing specific goals and targets. Then you can say, "We want to scrap our current plan. Here's what we propose to replace it. What do you think?" Keeping in mind, however, that this could turn out to be a long, drawn out process, I firmly believe that we have just RUN OUT OF TIME! We need to tweak what we have NOW. We can't afford to start over.
Thank you for your consideration. Respectfully submitted.
