I support the proposed extension of the moratorium on water bottling permits. However, this doesn't go far enough and I urge that the province impose a permanent ban with a phase out period of existing permits. A permanent ban is appropriate based on the following rationale:
1. the cost of the permits is ridiculously low compared to the insane profits made by multi-corporations like Nestle.
2. Ontarians bear the environmental costs of the industry including rampant plastic pollution and damage to our freshwater ecosystems (which are increasingly vulnerable to low water levels from climate-related effects i.e. hotter and drier summers)
3. the industry generates significant greenhouse gas emissions from the production of plastic bottles, along with the transport and distribution of bottled water
