As a car driver, I actually much prefer separate bicycle lanes, for the same reason I prefer pedestrians have sidewalks they can walk on. Sharing a road with bikes means either bobbing in-and-out of a lane to safely pass them, or being stuck behind them going paces cars of today struggle to idly keep.
Also, I feel like gridlocks are caused by people missing their exit lanes and swerving at the last minute, mostly causing crashes—fewer car lanes should mean less chance for confusion.
And hey, safer bike lanes might even mean more people on bicycles, and a reduce in cars on the road, thus reduced gridlocks?
