I am commenting to oppose the interim combined sewage overflow pipe which the Ford government has proposed to drain into Lake Ontario in the West Channel near Ontario Place. This plan to support the development of the Therme Spa at 955 Lakeshore Blvd West endangers the public's ability to safely enjoy the lake, impacting all free recreation in the area, including but not limited to swimming, paddling and general use of beach and lakefront by taxpaying residents and tourists alike.
The city already has a multi-year plan to deal with our city's sewage needs, and rushing through this interim and poorly thought out plan will have a number of costs: monetary, ecological, and social.
I have personally witnessed burst sewer pipes at Sunnyside beach two years in a row now, and its effects have been dire. Having a sewage pipe that intentionally dumps overflow straight into the lake right at the shore where both human and ecological activity and habitat are at their densest and most critically important is just irresponsible.
This proposed interim project is not in the public interest. It is also not in the interest of an already stressed out ecological system, and to put this forward at a time of extreme biodiversity loss is frankly horrifying.
As a citizen of this city, I reject this outright and demand review and action against this proposal.
