I am submitting my opposition to the proposal for an interim combined sewer system to support development at 955 Lake Shore Boulevard (Ontario Place). This proposal undermines decades of effort by the City of Toronto to separate and replace combined sewers, which have been critical in preventing raw sewage from entering Lake Ontario. It disregards commitments made under both domestic and international agreements that aim to safeguard water quality and protect the habitats of the Great Lakes. Furthermore, this proposal puts human health at risk by jeopardizing water quality at our beaches, the safety of fishing, and the overall appeal of the lake as a key attraction for both domestic and international visitors. Not only does this proposal prioritize the interests of the private sector over public well-being, but it also poses a direct threat to the delicate ecosystem of the lake, especially at a time when biodiversity is under unprecedented threat. The Tkaronto treaties, which recognize the rights of Indigenous peoples to land, water, and resources, must also be honored in these discussions. This plan fails to respect the longstanding stewardship that Indigenous communities have upheld for generations and their essential role in protecting this precious ecosystem.
