The province of Ontario has not held any consultations about this work with the general public and has blatantly disregarded our obligations to Indigenous peoples and the land and waters that form their territories.
Please remember and respect that we are on “One Dish One Spoon” Indigenous territory, formed by a wampum belt covenant between the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee and Mississaugas, an agreement that binds these Nations to share the territory and protect the land, a treaty which still exists and continues to be recognized today.
Indeed over time, this long-standing agreement has been extended to subsequent Indigenous Nations and peoples, as well as to settlers and newcomers, all of whom have been invited into this treaty in the spirit of peace, friendship and respect:
We all eat from the same dish with only one spoon. This means we share the responsibility of ensuring the dish is never empty. We divide the resources equally and sustainably, we only take what we need and always leave more for future generations. We are the caretakers of the lands, waters and of the creatures with whom we share it. And there are no knives at the table because each of us is obliged to keep the peace.
This proposal to benefit private sector initiatives, does not respect Indigenous agreements, is not in the public interest and threatens the stability of the lake ecosystem in a time of severe biodiversity loss.
Please deny this permit.
