I am submitting my comments on the proposed interim combined sewer to support development at 955 Lake Shore Boulevard (Ontario Place). I strongly oppose this proposal, as it undermines decades of efforts by the City of Toronto to replace and separate combined sewers in order to prevent raw sewage from being discharged into Lake Ontario. It also contradicts international agreements aimed at protecting water quality and habitats in the Great Lakes.
A plan is already in place to manage this and yet this proposal would waste tens of millions of taxpayer dollars to prioritize a private company over the wellbeing of the public and the environment.
Allowing this effluent discharge poses a significant risk to human health as it impacts water quality at an area used by swimmers, rowers and paddlers and of course, wildlife. It also tanks the lake’s appeal as a destination for both Canadian and international visitors and sporting events. Additionally, the province has not conducted any public consultations regarding this project.
This proposal, which prioritizes private sector interests, does not serve the public good and jeopardizes the lake’s fragile ecosystem at a time of critical biodiversity loss. I strongly urge you to deny this permit.
